I have noticed over the last year there has been a bit of a sea change in the feedback i have been hearing about apprentices, gone are the moans and groans about young people and their lack of commitment and work ethic. Now I am hearing about how great these youngsters are, ambitious, willing to learn and a great asset to the company. Interesting to see a survey saying that 2/5 of SME's said that they thought apprenticeships gave them access to the best talent.
Perhaps it is time for all of us to open our minds and our businesses to the value of training new staff.
Despite wide recognition that apprenticeships benefit business and the wider economy, only one-third of UK SMEs currently offer them, according to the latest Business Barometer from asset finance provider Close Brothers. But the report – a quarterly survey of SME owners and senior managers – also found that two-fifths of SMEs that do take on apprentices said it gives them access to the best young talent, and that 28pc found apprenticeships allowed them to build skills the business may be lacking.
